If I remember it right, this took about 60 takes. On film. Could be 16mm.
When Patrick Low, then ECD at DY&R asked me to work on this, I was delighted of course. But the going was not easy. Looking for an actor that would embody that sense of desperation, having those acting chops, delivering in a single take, in two languages?
The lines were beautifully crafted, encapsulating insight, thought and dark truth or lies, depending on how you see it.
Of course, the final twist is to realise who he was talking to in the end. How problem gambling really hurts the ones we love the most.
The little girl in the end was Karen Khoo’s niece, Lynette, who 16 years later, worked as my intern. Full circle indeed.
